Opatów is a historic town with the Romanesque collegiate church of St. Martin, one of the oldest monuments of the Świętokrzyskie Province. In the city, you can also visit the underground, which in the past served as merchant stores.

The stronghold in Opatów already existed in the 10th century and was an important stop on the trade route. It received city rights in the first half of the 13th century, but the most important of the local attractions and the city's main monument, the Collegiate Church of St. Marcin is older. It was built in the second half of the 12th century and it is a great example of the Romanesque style. Inside, you can see the bronze lament of Opatów - a Renaissance plaque depicting the mourning of the late chancellor Krzysztof Szydłowiecki, who was the then owner of Opatów.

In the Middle Ages, Opatów was an important merchant town and a craft center. Under the town's buildings, there were cellars where goods were stored. Today they are open to visitors as the Opatów Underground. The city was fortified, and part of the city walls with the Warsaw Gate crowned with a Renaissance attic has survived to this day. Among the monuments of the city there is also a Baroque church and a Bernardine monastery surrounded by walls.
