Nueva fortaleza

The fortress was built on the orders of the Medici at the end of the 16th century. It is situated on an artificial island surrounded by canals and the open sea. It served its military functions as a garrison and a military warehouse until World War II, when it was severely damaged by bombing. Today, there is a park within the partially preserved walls.
