Basílica de Santa Maria Assunta

The basilica is the main place of Catholic worship in the city. On July 6, 1711, it was proclaimed a minor basilica. The church was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Diana. Construction began in 1688 and was completed a decade later, giving the basilica back in the baroque style.
