La capilla real

Nombre local: Chapel Royal

The Royal Chapel at the Castle in Dublin is a magnificent, neo-Gothic building that is currently one of the representative interiors of the castle. Built of stone, with high windows decorated with stained glass, it has a beautiful interior covered with a palm vault.

The chapel was built at the beginning of the 19th century. Its opening took place on Christmas 1814. It was designed by one of the greatest British architects of the time, Francis Johnston. Until 1922 it was the representative chapel of the Irish Church. After the founding of the Irish State, it was handed over to the Roman Catholic Church. Currently, it is desacralized and excluded from worship.

The chapel is one of the best examples of the Gothic Revival style in Ireland. The interior is covered with a cross-ribbed vault over the nave and a palm vault over the galleries. In the middle of the walls there are galleries with carved balconies. Stone decorations include sculptures of angels, Evangelists and figures from Irish history. The stained glass windows show the coats of arms of local noble families.
