El Museo Histórico de Villèle

The Villèle Historical Museum in Saint-Paul is housed in a former colonial estate owned successively by the wealthy Desbassyns and Villèle families. The interior of the historic residence reflects the realities of the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Here you can see period furniture and decorative items belonging to a wealthy burgher family.

A chapel, a kitchen, the remains of a former sugar factory, a hospital for slaves and an exhibition hall are also open to the public. The permanent exhibition allows you to better understand the history of the island, with particular emphasis on the issue of slavery.
