Nuestra Señora de los Milagros
Our Lady of Miracles is a miraculous figure kept and venerated in the Monastery of La Rabida in the city of Palos de la Frontera. It was carved in a Gothic alabaster, most probably in the 13th century. The sculpture measures 54 cm in height and shows the Madonna holding the Child in her left hand and a grenade in her right hand, which replaced the earlier lily in 1937.
Explorers and conquistadors such as Christopher Columbus, the Pinzon brothers and Francisco Pizarro used to come to the monastery where the statue is located. It is worth mentioning that in 1993 the statue was crowned by Pope John Paul II, who called it "Mother of Spain and America."
There are several legends associated with the statue of the Mother of God, the most popular of which is that it was carved by St. Luke the Apostle and brought to Palos in 333 by the Libyan sailor Constantino Daniel.
