The history of the castle dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. It is the oldest surviving medieval castle in Denmark. It was built in a characteristic Scandinavian defensive style, and its architecture shows gothic and renaissance elements. It now houses a museum.
The fortress is surrounded by a moat and a 9 m high earth rampart, which protected the fortress against artillery fire. You can only get inside through the bridge. It is worth paying attention to the powerful, thick walls.
In the castle park you can see a garden with medicinal herbs. There is also a playground for children and a picturesque lake where water and wading birds often appear. There are picnic areas here, there is also a hut with a place for a bonfire. Every year in December, a traditional Christmas market is organized in the castle grounds.
