The history of the monastery dates back to the mid-18th century. Currently, it is the fifth largest manor in Denmark, situated among picturesque lakes and mountains. It is not a classical monastery but a lay community in which unmarried women and widows from noble families lead a lifestyle similar to that of nuns.
The first mansion in this place is mentioned at the end of the 14th century, and the present building was built in the years 1547-1575. It consisted of four interconnected wings made of red brick. One of them was dismantled and has not survived to modern times. The building is surrounded by a moat on three sides.
The picturesque park surrounding the property is open to the public. It has a lake, a stream with a waterfall, gardens and a 19th-century conservatory.
