Castillo de Augustenborg

Nombre local: Augustenborg Slot

The baroque palace complex was built in the second half of the 18th century. In the years 1932-2015, it served as a psychiatric hospital, and now houses a branch of the Danish Nature Agency. The palace is not open to the public, it can only be viewed from the outside. You can, however, walk around the castle park and courtyard.

The complex is situated directly on the gulf of the Augustenburger Fjord. The park offers picturesque views of the bay. In the place of the present landscape park, there used to be a baroque garden. Currently, there are extensive lawns, hedges and alleys. Under one of the lindens, you can see a commemorative plaque dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen, who reportedly wrote some of his fairy tales during his stay in the palace.

There are also two gazebos and farm buildings in the park. In the vicinity of the palace, there is a former palace church, which has served as a parish church since 1874. There is also a small museum dedicated to the history of the palace and the whole village.
