Nombre local: Kourion

Kourion is an archaeological complex near the village of Episkopi, remnants of the ancient city of Kourion. At some distance from the city, there is also the Temple of Apollo. Although archaeological work is still being carried out here, the complex is mostly open to the public.

This area was probably inhabited by people as early as the Neolithic period. The oldest buildings found date back to around the 14th century BC. In the 4th century BC there was already a thriving city here. In 365 AD, a strong earthquake caused severe damage, ending the heyday of Kourion.

Looking at the plan of the complex, you can see a clear division into two parts. In the eastern part, most of the buildings that have survived to this day come from Roman and Greek times. These are, among others remains of the Hellenistic theater, stadium and Roman baths. On the west side of the city, however, we encounter more buildings from the early Christian period. These are fragments of the basilica from the 5th century AD and the baptistery.
