Piriápolis is a resort town on the Atlantic coast. It is known for its beautiful beaches and the surrounding area offers many interesting places for trips lasting several hours.
The city was founded in the 19th century and today it is developing mainly as a tourist center. It boasts a good hotel and gastronomic base, as well as a rich nightlife. Piriápolis Beach is one of the most important attractions and, like San Francisco Beach, it provides a great environment for relaxation.
The city is situated among the coastal hills. One of them can be accessed by the Piriápolis cable car. There is a nice view of the coast from the top. A great attraction in the Piriápolis area is also the Cerro Pad de Azucar Reserve. It covers the slopes of one of the highest elevations of lowland Uruguay, which is just over 400 m above sea level. At the top there is the Cerro Pan Cross, to which a quite demanding hiking trail leads. In the reserve, you can also visit the Estación de Cría de Flora y Fauna, a nature station where, among others, battleships.
