Gutierrez Passage
Local name: Pasaje Gutiérrez
Gutiérrez Passage is a 19th century shopping gallery. The passage connects the streets Fray Luis de León and Castelar. This is the only shopping arcade in Valladolid. Phenomenal architecture in the style of Beaux-Arts and rich decorations enchant not only enthusiasts of art history. The heart of the object is a rotunda with a glass dome and a Renaissance statue of Mercury - the god of trade.
The passage was built in 1886 on the initiative of the Spanish merchant Eusebio Gutiérrez. The author of the design was the outstanding architect Jerome Ortiz de Urbina Junguitu. His inspiration was French shopping malls of this type, which as a result of the industrial revolution began to arise in Paris.
Shortly after its opening, the passage was abandoned and forgotten for nearly 100 years. It wasn't until the end of the 20th century that the city of Valladolid restored a building that now houses numerous cafes and pubs.
