Peñíscola Castle
Local name: Castillo Peñíscola
The Romanesque castle of Castillo de Peñíscola is located on top of a hill towering over the city. Inside the castle you can see the original layout of the rooms, including the throne room and the room where the conclave took place. There is one of the best libraries in the world. The castle is currently a very popular tourist destination, where the Comedy Film Festival takes place in summer.
The castle was built in the 13th century for the needs of the Knights Templar. For its creation, the remains of the Arab fortress originally located in this place were used. The castle is also known as Castillo del Papa Luna because it was a shelter for Pope Benedict XIII during the dispute over the legitimacy of his choice. In 1960, the building was thoroughly restored.
