The castle was built as a Moorish fortress in the 10th-11th centuries, built on an even earlier fortification. Behind the castle walls, higher on the hill, stands a watchtower known as the Tower of Aragon. It is connected to the castle by an underground tunnel, the course of which can be seen during the tour.
