Plaza de las Monjas

Local name: Plaza de las Monjas

Plac de las Monjas is the central point of the city and a popular promenade for tourists. In the middle of the square is the Fuente Magna fountain, which symbolizes the sequence of changes and the cycle of life. An important element of the space is the monument depicting Christopher Columbus. There are many important and architecturally interesting buildings around the square, such as Convento de las Madres Agustinas, Banco de España Ayuntamiento, and Hotel Edificio París.

Originally, the square was a courtyard that was part of the Convento de las Madres Agustinas. Its creation dates back to the 16th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the square was seriously rebuilt, tidied up and adapted to the modern standards of urban space. The architect Francisco Monís y Morales supervised the project. Another modernization of the square took place in 1988 under the supervision of the architect Alfonso Martínez Chacón.
