The seat of this modern cultural center is the former institute established by the Spanish politician, botanist and writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos in 1797. The institute was to provide training in mining and shipping. Today, it houses exhibition and conference rooms, and also hosts the Spanish-American International Book Fair.
