Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park

Local name: Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama

The Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park covers a mountainous area with numerous mountain ridges and valleys. Its highest part is Sierra Tejeda with the summit of La Maroma, rising at 2066 meters above sea level. You can admire picturesque views of the neighboring mountains and the Mediterranean coast.

There are hiking and mountain biking trails in the park. You can go mountain climbing and canoeing, explore caves or catch trout in the Cacin River. Another attraction is bird watching. There are, among others, golden eagles and southern eagles, griffon vultures and Eurasian eagle owls. The park is also home to the country's largest Iberian ibex population.

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that the name "Tejeda" refers to yews that used to be numerous in this area. Today, there are not many of them left - they were cut down because their fruit was poisonous to grazing cattle and sheep.
