Desert de les Palmes
Local name: Desert de les Palmes
Desert de les Palmes is a mountain range nearly 19 km long, stretching within the municipality of Benicàssim, close to the Mediterranean coast. It has the status of a nature reserve, and its highest peak is Bartolo at 729 meters above sea level
The range consists of two ridges covered with low Mediterranean forest and macchia. There are two castles dating back to Moorish times - Montornés and Miravet, as well as the historic 17th-century church Ermita de les Santes.
The name "Desert" refers to an ancient hermitage that was formerly located in the area. On the other hand, "de Palmes" refer to the low, stocky palm of the Chamaerops humilis species commonly found here. As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that it is the only endemic palm tree growing in Europe.
