Aracena is an Andalusian town with a Moorish castle. The fortress, strengthened and expanded later by the Spaniards, towers over the white, traditional buildings of the town.
During the Arab rule over Andalusia, Aracena was a strategic defensive point. For this reason, the Aracena Castle, which is today the main monument of the village, was built here. It stands on a hill and the buildings of the village spread below. Originally, there was a mosque within the castle, but it was demolished after the Reconquest. In its place was erected the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, combining the features of the Gothic and Mudejar styles.
The greatest attraction of Aracena is the Grotto of Miracles. It is one of the largest caves in Spain, with over 2 km of tourist route. In the basement you can see, among others several lakes and a magnificent dripstone form.
