The ruins of the medieval Likavka Castle rise above the village of the same name. The stronghold was the most important fortress in the lower Liptov region, guarding an important trade route leading from Liptov to Orava and further to Poland. A tower with an exhibition on the history of the castle and several torture tools is open to the public. The ruins offer a beautiful view of the Slovak Tatras. Marked hiking trails lead from Likavka and from the town of Ružomberok.
The castle was built after 1335 on the orders of the powerful feudal lord Donč. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was demolished on the order of Rakoczy, who was giving way to the Habsburg army. The castle was deserted over time and turned into a ruin. Conservation and reconstruction works began in the 1970s. The aforementioned tower, the third gate and fragments of the walls of the lower and upper castle were then rebuilt.
