Resava Cave

Local name: Resavska pećina

The karst cave is located on the limestone hill Babina glava. It has the status of a natural monument under legal protection. It consists of a system of corridors with a total length of approx. 4.5 km, which makes it one of the largest cave systems in the country. A little over 2.8 km has been thoroughly explored, and a section measuring approx. 800 m has been made available to the public.

The air temperature in the cave is constant throughout the year and amounts to approx. 7 ° C, so remember to wear warm clothes. Almost all halls and corridors in the cave, with the exception of the entrance hall, are decorated with calcite infiltrations. Here you can see numerous stalactites, stalagmites and colonnades. Some have fancy names that refer to their shape.

It is one of the oldest caves in Serbia. It was probably created 80 million years ago. It was officially discovered in 1962, but it had already been used by local shepherds as a shelter in bad weather. It was opened to the public in 1972.
