S. I. Witkiewicz Gallery

Local name: Galeria S. I. Witkiewicza

The gallery presents the largest collection of paintings and drawings by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz in Poland and in the world, which is still being completed. The collection is completed by photographs, correspondence and first editions of Witkacy's books.

The collected works come from all periods of the artist's work. You can see here, among others "Self-portrait" from adolescence, "Winter Landscape II", "Jupiter turning into a bull" and paintings painted as part of the activity of the "SI Witkiewicz" Portrait Company. 15 of the exhibited works were provided with audio description intended for the blind.

In 1965, the collection began with the purchase of 110 works by Witkacy belonging to the son of his friend, Teodor Białynicki-Birula. The first exhibition was opened in 1982, the second in 1988. The set of works shown is cyclically changed. Since 1994, the museum has been organizing international scientific sessions devoted to Witkacy.

Interesting are the annotations in the portraits, in which the artist who likes to experiment, informed under the influence of what intoxicants the given work was painted.
