Podhale Museum

Local name: Muzeum Podhalańskie

Museum of Podhale in Nowy Targ is located in the former town hall building. There are expositions concerning  crafts from Nowy Targ area, like: furriery, shoemaking, weaving, ceramics, cooperage, horticulture, woodcarving, blacksmithing and carpentry. The appearance of the printing house from the turn of nineteenth and twentieth centuries was reconstructed in the museum. It also has a collection of souvenirs related to John Paul II.

Town Hall in Nowy Targ was built in the half of nineteenth century. It is a classicist building with a tower with a glass lantern. From 1994, in its interior Museum of Podhale is located. It is a small institution, which collection is mainly focused on showing a craft traditions from Nowy Targ area. One can see tools, sign boards and products of craftsmen, which were working in Nowy Targ in the past. Most of this collection comes from the turn of nineteenth and twentieth century.

The reconstructed complete printing house comes from the same period. It belonged to Ignacy Borek and was printing local papers, leaflets, labels or invitations. At the exposition, the original printing hand press is presented.

Since 2011 in the museum there is also an exhibition “John Paul II- Nowy Targ, past and presence”. It combines of memoirs from the Pope's visit to Nowy Targ and to the surrounding mountains in 1979.
