Market Gate

Local name: Brama Targowa

The Market Gate is one of the most representative monuments in Elbląg. It is the only remnant of the city's defensive walls from the 14th century. The monument is represented by Elbląg on a PLN 2 coin from the National Bank of Poland series "Historic Cities in Poland". From the windows of the top floor you can see the tower of the church of St. Bartłomiej in Pasłęk.

This Gothic gate was erected on a rectangular plan, it is 26 m high. There is an ogival passage from the north side. In his portal, two granite blocks with a carved imprint of a bakery shovel have survived. From the east there is a monument to the baker who saved Elbląg from the Teutonic invasion in 1521. There is a small dormer on each of the four roof slopes.

The gate suffered significantly when the Red Army entered the city in 1945. In 2000, the mayor of Hamburg, Elbląg, Ortwin Rudny, founded a clock with a gold-plated dial that was mounted on the Market Gate. In 2006, the gate underwent a major renovation, and its interiors were adapted for tourist needs. It has a Tourist Information point within its walls.
