Called the "pearl of Podhale", Chochołów is known above all for its perfectly preserved wooden building complex. About 100 wooden houses survived here. The oldest dates from the end of the 18th century. They have a compact design of a traditional highlander village, called the „ulicówka” (the linear village). The tops of the houses are facing the road, they have sloping half-hip roofs covered with shingles, and their peaks are often decorated with highlander patterns.
Chochołów has the best preserved compact wooden buildings in Podhale. Unlike other villages in this area, old houses were not demolished here, but they were given a special care. Almost all are still inhabited. Every year before Easter in Chochołów there is a "washing of cottages" with soapy water. Thanks to this, they retain their light brown color. All houses included in the Chochołów buildings are under the conservationist protection. Noteworthy is the „dom z jednej jedli” (at number 24). It belongs to Anna Styrcula, and according to the local legend its walls were made of one fir tree stump.Less
