Mardalsfossen is the name of one of the highest waterfalls in Europe with a total height of 705 meters. It is located northwest of the village of Eikesdal belonging to the municipality of Nesset, with the symbolic image of a waterfall on the coat of arms. Mardalsfossen is one of the multi-level waterfalls and has the highest vertical slope in Norway at 250 meters.
The name of the facility refers to the valley in which the waterfall is located: “Mardala”, which refers to the former name of the Mardøla River: Mara. The old name of the river probably comes from a verb that can be translated as "to dig", "to die" or "to dig."
The waterfall is an important element not only of Norway's landscape. The water flowing through Mardalsfossen is used for hydropower purposes. The highest flow rate ever recorded for a waterfall is 45 cubic meters per second. Mardalsfossen is also used by artists such as Antony Gormley and environmental activists.
