Hill of Crosses

The hill, commonly known as the Hill of Crosses, is a place of special religious importance. It was here in 1993 that Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass during his pilgrimage to Lithuania. The history of the hill dates back to 1430, but only after the fall of the November Uprising in 1831, various types of crosses began to be brought and left in this place - as votive offerings, symbols of faith or hope. There are over 100,000 of them here.
