Smithwick's Experience

Smithwick's Experience Kilkenny is a former brewery where Smithwick's was brewed. It is currently open to the public. The route runs through two floors of the building and is intended to appeal to all senses. Visitors can smell hops, taste the fresh wort, feel the temperature of roasted barley, see holograms seven feet high and hear sounds coming from monastic rooms. At the very end there is a Smithwick's beer tasting.

Smithwick's Brewery is considered one of the oldest in Ireland. It was founded in a Franciscan monastery. The abbey and brewery were closed after three hundred years of operation during the Reformation in Ireland in 1537. In 1705 the land was leased by John Smithwick and Richard Cole, who started their brewing activities. The brewery remained wholly owned by the Smithwicks family until 1964, when Guinness and Company purchased a controlling interest. The brewery operated until 2014.
