Laois is a county that is not very often visited by tourists, thanks to which it has retained its local, non-commercialized color. Vegetable and cereal crops are grown here on the vast plains, and organic and organic farms have been gaining popularity in recent years. There are also a lot of significant magnate residences that can be visited.
The northern part of the county is occupied by the 575 m above sea level Slieve Bloom mountains, which also stretch in neighboring Offaly. The mountain range is covered with forests, and streams flow here and there forming cascades and small waterfalls. Almost 500 km of hiking trails have been marked out and picnic areas have been prepared.
The most interesting places in Laois include the Dunamase Rock, which grows directly from the surrounding plain. It has been a defensive place since the Neolithic times, and the castle ruins here are from the Middle Ages.
Laois is a land where you can see a lot of magnate mansions and historic parks. The most important of them is Emo Court, a classical palace surrounded by extensive gardens. Other interesting palaces include Durrow, Stradbally, Ballyfin and Tinnakill.
