Carlow Castle

Clochan were built in Ireland from the Neolithic times to the 20th century. no mortar or any other fasteners were used during their construction. From a distance, such houses looked like stone beehives.

The Stone Beehives of Fahan were probably erected in the 12th century. It is associated with the Normandy invasion, during which farmers were driven from fertile lands to barren, rocky peninsulas. They most likely built a housing estate, the remains of which can be admired to this day. Houses are round or square, built without mortar. Most of them only have walls with low entrances. A few are surrounded by the remains of a stone wall, suggesting it was a raid refuge.
