Blarney Stone

Located inside: Blarney Castle

The Blarney Stone is a block of limestone embedded in the wall of Blarney Castle. It measures 30 cm by 120 cm and, according to legend, has magical properties, which attracts many tourists to this place. Whoever kisses this stone is said to be gifted with eloquence and the ability to persuade and pay compliments.

This legend has its origins in history. In the 16th century, the owner of the castle notoriously attracted the wrath of Queen Elizabeth I, but his eloquence and great charisma always allowed him to get out of trouble.

The origin of the stone itself is not explained and is also the subject of several (contradictory) legends. The castle in Blarney itself was built in the mid-fifteenth century on the site of the previously existing fortifications. Until today, it has been preserved in a partially ruined state. In addition to the Blarney stone and the ruins of the fortress, visitors also enjoy visiting the gardens surrounding the castle.
