The museum was established in 1996. Its task is to document and introduce visitors to the history of Cavan County. The seat of the museum is the 19th century Poor Clares monastery. Several permanent exhibitions relating to different periods in the history of the region were placed in its halls.
In the museum there are, among others, excavated tools, weapons, ornaments and utensils, there are also items belonging to local churches and monasteries. Many of them are beautiful examples of medieval woodcarving, jewelery and decorative arts. The crosses and chalices are decorated with Celtic motifs.
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, exhibitions on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries were opened. The history of the county during the Great Famine is presented here. The appearance of the trenches from the First World War was also restored. A separate exhibition is dedicated to the singer from Cavan, Percy French.
