The column crowned with the statue of the ancient Hermaphrodite, a descendant of Hermes and Aphrodite, is the work of the architect Eugene Poitoux. The fountain was erected in 1887 in place of the statue of liberty from 1848. In 2005, the fountain was moved a few meters to better blend in with the renovated boulevards.
