The castle of Haut Barr is located on a rocky hill 460 m above sea level above the town of Saverne. They are the ruins of a Gothic fortress, from which there is a beautiful view of the Alsace and Vosges plains, and in good weather you can see the cathedral of Strasbourg.
The castle was built around 1100. Fragments of the defensive walls and a Romanesque-Gothic chapel have survived to this day. The stronghold stands on top of the hill, on two sandstone rocks located here. They are connected by the so-called Devil's Bridge, which is one of the main attractions of the region.
Within the castle walls, you can also see a renovated 15th century residential building built in a characteristic Gothic style of Alsace. It is built in a half-timbered structure, with wooden decorations and a multi-hip roof with a tile roof.
