Montélimar is the sweetness capital of southern France. Since the 19th century, nougat has been produced here, which is one of 13 traditional French desserts. In the historic factory, you can visit the Nougatu Museum.
The city has roots that go back to antiquity. The remains of an aqueduct, basilica, baths and forum have been preserved here from the Roman times. It also developed in the Middle Ages as a thriving commercial center. It was then that one of the most important monuments of Montélimar today, the Adhamar Castle, was built. It stands on a hill above the city and offers a beautiful panorama of the area.
Montélimar Center has retained much of its old charm. There are houses with decorated facades on the cobbled streets. The most beautiful are the Renaissance house of Diane de Poitiers and the 17th century Hôtel du Puy-Montbrun. The medieval gate of St. Martin and the church of the Holy Cross, rebuilt in the neoclassical style.
Montélimar is known throughout France for the production of nougat and the greatest of the local attractions are associated with it. The Nougat Factory and Museum as well as the Sweets and Nougat Palace are two places that will surely delight both children and adults. In the first one you can learn the entire technology of nougat production and visit the former factory, the second is a kind of theme park inspired by sweets.
There are also other interesting museums in the town, such as the European Aviation Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Miniatures.
