The small stone house is in fact a 17th-century customs guardhouse and an observation point over Granville Bay. It owes its name to the outstanding military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre of Vauban (1633-1707), who created a system of coastal fortifications. Similar stone guardhouses are found in Champeaux and Saint-Jean-le-Thomas.
