The Old Church of Tampere was built in 1825 near the Central Square. It is used primarily by the Swedish-speaking Lutheran congregation. It was built of wood according to the design of the Italian architect Carlo Bassi. The temple and the adjoining belfry are the two oldest surviving buildings in the city.
Over the years, the Old Church in Tampere has been renovated and rebuilt several times. In the mid-twentieth century, it underwent a major renovation, during which it was restored to its original appearance.
