The Gustav Sword Fortress is part of the defensive Suomenlinna Fortress, built on a group of six islands at the sea entrance to Helsinki. Since 1991, the entire fortress has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The bastion and fortifications on the island of Kustaanmiekka, or the Sword of Gustav, functioned for years as the backbone of the entire fortress. The most important preserved fortifications include, among others the huge, two-story Royal Gate with a drawbridge.
