Otavalo is a city located at the foot of the Imbabura volcano. It is mainly known for the largest handicraft market in Ecuador.
The city was founded in the colonial era. It has two main squares where large fairs of local products are held. You can buy jewelry, ceramics, textiles, sculptures and many other things here. The market is shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow, and the norm is to bargain over prices, as sellers usually offer them in a multiplied version.
The attraction of Otavalo is its location. This makes it a good starting point for a trip to Imbabura, which is worth taking with a guide due to the lack of markings on the trail. The picturesque Peguche Waterfall and Laguna de Mojada are also nearby. You can get to both places by renting transport in Otavalo. An interesting attraction is the Condor Park lying on a mountain ridge, where if you are lucky you can see these giant birds.
