Plava Grotto, or the Blue Grotto, is one of the major attractions of the island of Cres.
The entrance to the cave is on the edge of the Žanja beach (about 1.6 km from Lubenice). The interior can only be accessed from the sea. No specialized diving equipment is required - a snorkeling mask and snorkel are sufficient. At low tide, it is possible to explore using a small pontoon.
The cave is about 20 m long. Inside is a large lagoon illuminated with blue glow and a small pebble beach. Bluish lighting is created by sunlight reflecting off the water and walls of the cave. The best time to visit is afternoon hours, when indoor lighting is the most favorable.
Plava Grotto has two entrances. The first of them, easier, not requiring diving, is besieged by sunbathers. The second one, several meters away, requires diving to a depth of about 2 m and overcoming about 5 m with an underwater shaft. It is only recommended for experienced divers and owners of appropriate equipment.
