Košljun is a small island (area less than 8 ha, coastline 1100 m). It was inhabited already in ancient times, when there was a fortified house here. The name of the island comes from the Latin word castellum, meaning castle, small stronghold. Currently, the main attraction of the island is the Franciscan monastery, which houses the ethnographic museum.
The monks lived on the island since the ninth century. Initially, a Benedictine abbey operated here, who erected a Romanesque church of St. Mary. Its foundations were found during renovation works in the current Franciscan monastery. Brotherhood of St. Francis of Assisi was brought to the island of Košljun thanks to the efforts of the princes Martin and Ivan Frankopan ruling the island of Krk. Permission to found a monastery was issued in 1447 by Pope Nicholas V.
A small island is also an area with an extremely rich and diverse flora - about 400 plant species are classified there. The most convenient way to get to Košljun is by water taxi from the port of Punat. The journey takes only a few minutes.
