The ancient baths complex was built at the end of the 2nd century, during the Roman Empire. They were used for about a hundred years, until the end of the 3rd century. They are the largest preserved thermal baths in the Balkans and the fourth largest in Europe. Currently, they can be visited, and in summer concerts and other outdoor cultural events are organized there.
The baths consisted of various types of pools - cold, warm and hot ones, changing rooms and a bar serving as a social and sports space. They were heated using the nearby hot mineral springs. For this purpose, a hypocaust was used, i.e. a system of floor pipes and special cavities through which warm air was led to the top of the building.
During excavations in the area of the thermal baths, statues of Roman gods and heroes, including Mercury and Heracles, which probably decorated the halls, were found. Coins minted in the 2nd-3rd century were also discovered.
