Strandja Nature Park

Local name: Природен парк Странджа

The protected nature park is located in the central part of the Strandzha mountain range on the Bulgarian-Turkish border and extends all the way to the Black Sea coast. There are five nature reserves in its area, including the oldest reserve in the country, Silkosiya, established in 1933. The entire park belongs to the European Natura 2000 network.

The vegetation differs from the typical European landscape, it is closer to that of the Caucasus. Much of the park is made up of mixed and deciduous forests. Nearly one third are old trees. More than 60 species of mammals, 269 species of birds and over 30 species of reptiles and amphibians live here.

There are numerous archaeological and historical monuments in the park. The oldest human traces discovered here date back to the 6th millennium BC. remains of a Thracian sanctuary and historic, traditional architecture from the mid-17th century.
