Clock Tower

Local name: Часовникова кула

The historic tower was built in 1866 during the Ottoman rule. As one of the few buildings in the region, it is an example of the so-called Bulgarian Renaissance with baroque elements and a dome inspired by Muslim influences.

The tower is 30 meters high, making it the tallest clock tower in the country. Its lower part is 11 meters high and is built of stone on a square plan. The middle part consists of half-columns finished with cornices, and the upper part, housing a clock and a bell, is shaped like a cube. Spiral wooden stairs lead to it.

Initially, at the top of the tower there was a wooden house from which a Turkish figurine with a fez on its head was leaning out at the full hour. This element was burned by local residents as a symbol of Turkish oppression shortly after the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878.
