Niterói is a city located in front of Rio de Janeiro, on the other side of the bay and connected to it by the 13 km long, longest bridge in Brazil, Rio - Niterói. The city's waterfront offers a beautiful panorama of Rio, and the local sandy beaches with a total length of several kilometers are among the best in the country.
The city is famous for its modern architecture. Apart from the capital of the country, Brasilia, it is home to the largest number of buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer. At the beginning of the 21st century, many of them were restored and now function as Niterói's biggest attraction, the Niemeyer-Caminho Niemeyer Trail.
The most important building of Niemeyer in Niterói is the Museum of Contemporary Art, which looks like a huge space saucer standing on the seashore. Its collection includes mainly the works of Brazilian artists who created in the 20th century. When visiting Niterói, it is good to follow the sea to admire the views of the bay and the nearby Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to contemporary architecture, Niterói also offers attractions related to relaxing by the sea. Sandy beaches such as Boa Viagem, Itacoatiara, Itaipu, Camboinhas, Piratininga and others allow not only relaxation, but also water sports. Windsurfing and surfing are very popular here.
