The folklore museum includes eight restored workers' houses from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. You can see there not only the conditions of contemporary life, but also the interior of a tailor's shop, pharmacy and confectionery. There are original furniture and everyday items. There is also a museum inn where you can eat and drink traditionally brewed beer.
The museum was founded in 1939 on the initiative of the artist and curator Guillaume Michiels and the pharmacist Karel De Wolf. Initially, it was located in the hall next to the city belfry. It was not until the end of the 1970s that the city authorities moved it to its present location.
On selected days, the museum organizes demonstrations of the preparation of traditional sweets and dishes, and in the inner courtyard and in the garden, folk and children's games and games are presented. The annual Midwinter event is also held here in the run-up to Christmas.
