The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Rocio was built in the 1960s, with a hermitage and a chapel already in the 13th-14th centuries. The present sanctuary was built on a Latin cross plan, designed by architects Alberto Balbontín Orta and Antonio Delgado Roig. It houses a figure carved in wood, depicting the Mother of God with the baby.
According to a local legend, the miraculous figure was found in the woods by a hunter who wanted to take it home. However, at night, while he was asleep, the sculpture returned to where it had been taken from. For this reason, it was considered sacred and the first chapel was built there.
Every year, a pilgrimage is organized here, known as Romeria de El Rocio, gathering around a million believers and is the second most important pilgrimage in the country. It is accompanied by singing, flamenco dances and an atmosphere of joyful fun.
