Liptovský hrad

Lokaler Name: Liptovský hrad

Liptov Castle is the highest situated castle in Slovakia - it lies at an altitude of 993 m above sea level. The ruins of this medieval defensive fortress are located on the southern edge of the Choczański Mountains. In the 1980s, archaeological works were carried out here, during which fragments of the walls of the residential palace, a water cistern and part of the defensive walls were secured. The ruins are open to visitors. Marked hiking trails lead to them, and due to the high altitude, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

The castle was once well guarded - on both sides it is protected by almost vertical rock walls, and on two sides by steep slopes. There is a small cave nearby that was already inhabited by man in the Eneolithic. The castle itself was built by order of the King of Hungary Bela IV in the 13th century. It guarded the western part of the Liptov Basin, as well as the trade route running through the Sesterska Valley to Orava and further to Poland.
