Kumlaby Kirche

The historic Kumlaby church stands on the island of Visingsö. It is one of the best-preserved early medieval buildings in the northwest of Småland. It was built in the first half of the 12th century on the site of an older wooden temple.

The church tower was probably added in the 13th century. Initially, it was topped with a tall, pointed spire, which was cut in the 17th century, and an observation deck was built in the place of its top. It was used for star observation by students of the school, which operated in the church building from the end of the 17th to the beginning of the 19th century. Currently, it is a vantage point from which you can admire the panorama of the entire area.

The interior of the church is decorated with paintings dating mainly from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. scenes from the lives of saints. During the visit, it is also worth paying attention to the pulpit with decorative reliefs and the decorated altar.
