Kathedrale von Kalmar

Lokaler Name: Kalmar Domkirke

The historic cathedral in Kalmar was built in the second half of the 17th century according to a design by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. It is considered to be one of the most outstanding examples of baroque architecture in Sweden, and has been rebuilt and renovated several times over the years.

There is a gilded main altar, designed in 1704 by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. It is crowned with the image of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, surrounded by a luminous halo, and below you can see the scene of the creation of the world. There is also a pulpit decorated with gilded sculptures and reliefs showing scenes from the Passion. It is supported by a gilded sculpture of Moses sitting on a pedestal.

During the tour, it is also worth paying attention to the 17th and 18th century tombstones in the presbytery and the ship-shaped baptismal font by the sculptor Erik Sand.
